Why this is crucial in the report designer
A good layout doesn't stand out because of its effects, but rather because of its effortless orientation. Recipients recognize important things first and find details without searching.
Elements and settings at a glance
- Paper child: Paper size, for example A4.
- Landscape: Switches between portrait and landscape format.
- Margins: Top, bottom, left and right margins.
- Snap Grid / Grid: Helps with even placement.
- Align: Aligns selected elements to edge or center.
- Same size/distance: Unifies width, height and spacing.
- Location/Size: Exact position and dimension of the selected element.
- Padding: Inner space between content and frame.
Here's how to do it
- First set the paper size, orientation and margins.
- Define a simple grid for logo, address, title, data and footer.
- Select multiple elements and use alignment and even spacing.
- Check padding, font sizes and white space.
- Test at 100 percent zoom, in PDF and on a real printer.
Exercise
Align three labels exactly to the left, giving them the same height and equal vertical spacing. Then switch A4 portrait to landscape format and assess the effects.
