02. Prepare Windows Server 2025

The most unspectacular installation step often determines months of trouble-free operation: a cleanly updated, comprehensibly configured operating system.

Why this station counts

Time, DNS, network profile, data carrier, update and security status affect certificates, SQL connections, protocols and backups. Deviations are later incorrectly attributed to X-ERP.

The resilient process

1. Assign final server name, static network parameters and correct DNS/time source.
2. Install any released Windows updates and reboot until no reboot is pending.
3. Separate system, data, logs and backup according to operational plan.
4. Activate only needed roles; minimally configure firewall and remote administrative access.
5. Document patch status, baseline values and a clean starting point.

Functional test - only then continue

• Server time and time zone are correct.
• DNS resolution forward and backward is plausible.
• All volumes have purpose, free storage and monitoring.
• No update waits for a restart.
• Administrative access is personal and logable.

If the result is not correct

• Incorrect time creates certificate and protocol problems.
• Temporary server names surprisingly often remain productive.
• Unplanned data storage on the system volume makes growth and recovery difficult.
