Your goal

You can bind, sort, format, and use grid columns and pivot areas for detailed analysis or multidimensional analysis.

Why this is crucial in the dashboard designer

Dashboards need evidence to support their statements. Grid and Pivot enable the path from the key figure back to data sets, categories and time periods.

Elements and settings at a glance

• Grid columns: Dimensions or measures as visible columns.
• Grid Column Type: Text, Dimension, Measure, Delta, Hyperlink, Sparkline or other available types.
• Sparkline: Compact gradient within a grid column.
• Pivot rows: Dimensions of vertical hierarchy.
• Pivot columns: Dimensions of horizontal hierarchy.
• Pivot values: Aggregated key figures in the cells.
• Totals/Grand Totals: Subtotals and totals.
• Sorting: Order by dimension or measure.
• Conditional formatting: Highlighting exceptions, values or entire lines.

Here's how to do it

1. Decide between detailed verification in the grid and compression in the pivot.
2. First, bind identification and key metrics.
3. Organize columns by reader path and format data types.
4. Configure sorting, totals and sparkline if necessary.
5. Test filters, case sensitivity, drill-down and export.

Exercise

Create a grid with receipt, partner, date and value and a pivot with year/month in columns, category in rows and sales as value.

Check the result

• Grid rows can be compared with X-ERP data sets.
• Pivot totals agree with the control total.
• Sorting and filters deliver expected data sets.
• Column widths, formats and totals remain readable in the viewer.

Typical errors and their solutions

• Too many detail columns: Hides the important fields and makes mobile use more difficult.
• Pivot without a clear hierarchy: Creates a broad, difficult to interpret matrix.
• Filter term with different spelling: Cannot return a match due to case sensitivity.
